Masterplanning

Where people live, work and spend their leisure time has a major effect on their lives. Places need to be well planned, well designed and well managed to provide a good quality of life. At Michael Cook Associates Masterplanning is the first step in creating attractive environments. Every site has its own particular brief, setting, and set of challenges, and each site demands a unique response. We excel at understanding each development's setting to help to influence and create attractive and strongly defined public places.

Feasibility Studies

Michael Cook Associates provides a wide variety of planning and feasibility study services. Feasibility studies are an important aspect of the pre-design and pre-approval phase of projects, allowing sites to be evaluated for suitability.

During the feasibility phase we can:

Feasibility studies can protect from some of the unknowns that often arise during the course of a project. We have the necessary experience to help explore a project before any significant amount of resources needs to be invested.

Multidisciplinary

We have forged numerous close working relationships with many other consultants in the South East and this allows us to form Multidisciplinary Teams which can provide a total service if required. Structural Engineering, Quantity Surveying, Mechanical %26 Electrical Design and Landscaping are all possible through a single appointment. These working relationships will improve the quality of service and products which can be provided to our clients.

CDM Service

Our qualified CDM Co-ordinators are trained to meet the high standards set by the RIBA, CITB, and Association for Project Safety. As the single point of contact for all Health and Safety issues, we will ensure all work complies with CDM regulations. We will prepare and submit all relevant information, including Pre-construction Information Packs, HSE notifications, and Health & Safety Files on completion. We have experience of assessing Designers and Contractors competence under the regulations, and reviewing Risk Registers, and Contractors Health & Safety Plans. Most importantly, we advise our clients on the relevant issues at each stage of the project development to ensure that they comply with the legislation.

Sustainability

At Michael Cook Associates, sustainability is carefully considered on all of our projects, at all stages. Sustainable design is "front loaded" compared with traditional design and, as such, early design decisions are critical. Issues such as building orientation, renewable energy, and modern technologies are discussed with clients and other consultants to ensure an integrated solution.

The selection of construction methods, structure and building fabric are all undertaken with reference to the Green Guide to Specification, with the aim of using only 'A' rated materials. Many of our projects are now BREEAM Assessed to ensure the best environmental solution is developed and to assist in key decision making. We have experience in designing integrated low energy and low environmental impact buildings, both cost effectively and to the highest design quality.

Code for Sustainable Homes

Michael Cook Associates now offer a Code for Sustainable Homes Assessor service for both open-market and affordable residential development alongside our existing design, project management and CDM services.
Code for Sustainable Homes replaces the EcoHomes standard and is the new means of measuring the sustainability of new homes. The Code is made up of nine categories, with minimum standards set for energy and water usage within homes. All affordable housing currently has to meet Code for Sustainable Homes Level 3, and it is likely that open-market housing will also need to meet Level 3 in 2011.
As part of our service, Michael Cook Associates provide specific feasibility and pre-construction advice for initial sketch proposals, planning schemes and building regulations applications to allow clients to tailor developments to meet a desired or required Code for Sustainable Homes level. As a practice, we are committed to improving the market recognition of sustainable housing, promoting the various types of renewable energy and minimising energy
Please contact Neil St Clair should you wish to discuss any aspect of the Code for Sustainable Homes.

BREEAM

Michael Cook Associates are a licensed BREEAM Assessor for the BREEAM Education scheme. As a BRE Global licensed assessor we submit BREEAM assessment reports and register BREEAM assessments for certification by BREEAM/BRE Global.
BREEAM (Building Research Establishments Environmental Assessment Method) is the worlds leading and most widely used environmental assessment method for buildings. It sets the standard for best practice in sustainable design and has become the key measure used to describe a buildings environmental performance.
As part of our assessment strategy, we aim to mitigate the impacts of buildings on the environment and stimulate demand for sustainable buildings, incorporating innovative environmental design into buildings at feasibility stage.
Michael Cook Associates are committed to improving the market recognition of low environmental impact buildings and to ensure that best environmental practice is incorporated in buildings, minimising energy and water use whilst considering the use of renewable technologies.
Please contact Education Director Stuart Eatock should you wish to discuss any aspect of BREEAM.
